  1. In computing, a system for processing data
  2. with little or no operator intervention. 
  3. Batches of data are prepared in advance,
  4. and processed during regular `runs'
  5. (for example, each night, or at weekends).
  6. This enables efficient use of the computer
  7. and is well suited to applications of a
  8. repetitive nature, such as a company payroll.
